HMF Rise to the Occasion Creating a New Storage Facility

Arena Structures are a large events company specialising in temporary event spaces.

Storage space had become a problem for Arena Structures at their St Ives facility and they required a permanent storage floor over their workshop areas to create additional storage for large finished goods to be stored. Having worked with HMF at their other storage facilities in Coventry and Wimbledon, they knew HMF would be able to offer sound advice and competitive solutions to solve their space problems.

HMF came up with a solution in the form of a large 267m² mezzanine floor designed to support 500kg loads per m². The new mezzanine floor was to be built alongside an existing mezzanine floor with column spacings to suit the workshop areas below.

The client needed a large pallet gate to accept large loads up to 3m wide x 2.4m high so HMF installed a counterbalance type gate which protects the exposed perimeter at all times and can accommodate the client’s loads in a safe operation.

A new rear fire escape was also required off the new mezzanine and a 1000mm wide General Access staircase with mid landing was installed to provide safe escape access and also staff access onto the mezzanine floor. The exposed perimeter of the mezzanine floor was protected by hand and knee rail with metal kick plate.

Due to its size, the mezzanine floor was required to be 1 hour fire resisting to comply with the latest Building Regulations, so HMF also installed a 1 hour fire resisting suspended ceiling, 1 hour fire resisting white column casings and a 1 hour fire resisting perimeter fascia to complete the fire protection.

HMF also advised Arena Structures on the lighting and emergency lighting requirements and designed and installed a lighting system comprised off 600mm x 600mm LED modular panels fitted with a 1 hour fire canopy in the ceiling void. Some fittings were upgraded to include an emergency battery backup system providing emergency lighting as required by Building Regulations.

HMF submitted a Building Regulations application on behalf of Arena Structures to include all the elements of the project, providing a comprehensive service.

Arena Structures have benefitted from the mezzanine floor, releasing valuable floor space for their finished items and also providing better lighting by enclosing the workshops below. The new safety pallet gate provides safe access for their products to the new mezzanine area.

The mezzanine floor, suspended ceiling, column cases, fascia and lighting were all installed over a 3 week period enabling the client to carry on working around the area by using safety fencing to protect the HMF workforce and the client’s staff. The client has already commented that they will be looking at getting more mezzanine floors installed by Hampshire Mezzanine Floors in the near future.
